Auf seiner Herbsttagung am 05. November 2007 in Cottbus beschloss der Rat Deutscher Planetarien (jetzt: Gesellschaft Deutschsprachiger Planetarien) einstimmig, sich in Zusammenarbeit mit der Initiativgruppe ProAstro für die deutschlandweite Einführung des Schulfaches Astronomie einzusetzen.

Seit ihrer Einführung im Jahr 1905 bildet die spezielle Relativitätstheorie Albert Einsteins die Grundlage für alle Beschreibungen physikalischer Vorgänge. Ein wesentliches Prinzip dieser Theorie besagt, dass die Lichtgeschwindigkeit immer konstant bleibt, unabhängig davon, ob sich ein Beobachter mit eigener Geschwindigkeit bewegt oder nicht. Allerdings ist die Zeit in diesem Konzept nun nicht mehr konstant, sondern in einem bewegten System wie bspw. einer Rakete im Weltall verlangsamt. Diese Zeitdilatation oder „Zeitdehnung“ wurde 1938 erstmals gemessen* und mit einer Genauigkeit von einem Prozent bestimmt. Eine jetzt publizierte Arbeit von Physikern der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz ist gegenüber dieser ersten Messung 100.000 Mal genauer.

True colour images of Earth as seen by Rosetta’s OSIRIS camera are now available on ESA’s website. The pictures were taken on November 13 during the swing-by, and on November 15, as Rosetta left on its way to the outer Solar System.

Einem US-Forscherteam ist zum ersten Mal das therapeutische Klonen von Affen gelungen: sie verpflanzten das Erbgut von Hautzellen eines erwachsenen Rhesusaffen-Männchens in entkernte Eizellen und erzeugten daraus Embryonen, aus denen sie anschließend embryonale Stammzellen gewannen. Diese Zellen entsprachen in allen getesteten Punkten herkömmlichen embryonalen Stammzellen, aus denen sich bspw. Herzmuskel- oder Nervenzellen entwickeln.

NASA satellites continue to capture remarkable new images of the wildfires raging in Southern California. At least 15 massive fires are reported to have scorched about 415.000 acres, from north of Los Angeles to the Mexican border southeast of San Diego. Dry, drought-stricken vegetation and Santa Ana winds, which can reach hurricane speeds, have contributed to the devastating effect of these blazes. According to news reports, the blazes have killed one person and injured at least 70 more. Thirty-four firefighters have been hurt. More than 1.300 homes have been destroyed and nearly a million people have been forced to evacuate.
